More than 100 local Lake County residents braved the cold and came out to enjoy a variety of holiday classics courtesy of the Navy Band Great Lakes at the Sounds of the Season concert at Waukegan High School Dec. 15.
During the show, “Jingle Bells,” “Hanukkah Medley,” “Nutcracker Suite” and other holiday favorites were performed by a number of different sections of the band based on type of instrument, leading up to a special visit and musical performance by Santa Claus himself.
There was also a Toys for Tots collection held during the event giving the chance for attendees to donate to a good cause while enjoying the free performance.
“We have a lot of different styles of music,” said MU2 Katherine Kalinowski, who plays the clarinet. “We have a rock band, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, and full band. I love seeing people have a good time and smiling. Watching the kids enjoy Christmas music is a nice highlight.”
The annual concert also provided the opportunity to showcase the positive relationship between Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) and local communities around Lake County, as both Waukegan High School and multiple NSGL commands work together each year to make the concert a reality.
“We love being able to reach out to Waukegan, since it’s right here in our neighborhood,” said Kalinowski. “Sometimes we play on the base, but it is also nice to get out and play just for the neighborhood. They love seeing the Navy represented. They are usually eager to tell us about their loved ones who are in the military. They love seeing what we do.”
