The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County’s snowshoeing team recently competed in the Special Olympics Regional Snowshoeing tournament at Hoffman Estates High School.
SRACLC’s dedicated athletes came ready to compete in their races in hopes of advancing to the State Winter Games. The team of 11 competed in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 400-meter races and a 4x100-meter relay.
Mallory Marvin, Katie Ulwelling and Chris Walti of Libertyville, Jenny Rockstroh of Hawthorn Woods, and Katie Millar of Mundelein led the team, each bringing home gold in two events. Overall, the team took first in 13 events and sent nine athletes to the Winter Games at Chestnut Mountain in Galena.
“I could not be more proud of our athletes,” coach Kelly Smith said. “They committed to 10 weeks of snowshoeing practice in all sorts of interesting weather. They worked incredibly hard racing through the mud, deep snow and frozen ground. Their devotion to practice no matter the condition has definitely paid off.”
